This type of realization, however persistent, lacked the certainty often heard in transgender people. There was no internal truth in contradiction with the body. Although the young Reimer was aware that he felt different, he remained uncertain about what made him feel that way. He did not have either a conviction or any alternative explanation about himself. The truth was repressed, and he just kept on entertaining doubts: “I didn’t want to admit it, I figured I didn’t want to wind up opening a can of worms” (Diamond & Sigmundson, 1997, p. 300).

Although Money described the girl in the study as having many “tomboyish” behavioral traits, he contended that a female gender identity had been differentiated. Thus, he maintained his thesis that gender identity is not sufficiently differentiated at birth, and that a genetic male could be successfully raised as a girl (see Bradley et al., 1998). For Money (Money & Tucker, 1975), the favorable evolution of the reassigned girl was a milestone:

Although this girl is not yet a woman, her record to date offers convincing evidence that the gender identity gate is open at birth for a normal child no less than for one born with unfinished sex organs or one who was prenatally over or underexposed to androgen, and that it stays open at least for something over a year after birth.
